This scientist found out in the 19th century that fauna and flora differ greatly between West and East Indonesia. The imaginary line separating the two is called the Wallace line. It runs through the Lombok Strait, encompassing some of the deepest oceans in the region. Before going to the hotel, start exploring Lombok. You'll have ample time for walking, swimming and snorkeling to an easy reef just outside the coast line. Or get on a glass bottom boat to watch submarine life. Return to your hotel in the early afternoon. A wonderful road leads past palm fringed beaches and an idyllic ocean, dotted with colorful sails of jukung, small traditional catamarans.
