It was the collaboration between the famous Balinese Dancer Wayan Limbak and the German painter Walter Spies, which created the peculiar Balinese Kecak dance in the 1930’s. It contains movements and themes in portions of the Ramayana epic. The name is derived from the hypnotic chattering sounds made by the performers in action. The story dates from an important episode of the Ramayana epic, but the attraction lies with the amazing music and rhythm created by a choir of some men. Remarkably, this dance is one of the few without ritualistic purpose. Ubud is the epicenter of arts in Bali, and thus the place to be to enjoy the performance of a Kecak dancer or participate in a one hour Kecak dancing lesson to learn the rhythms from the experts.
